Hearing the passion in Corne and Rudy about their egg program has spurred us on to share their story with you. It’s been an incredible opportunity to learn about the vibrant community of producers and growers situated right here in Lethbridge. Many people might be surprised to know, as we were, that our area produces such high quality agriculture that it is utilized across Alberta in the finest restaurants. Corne and Rudy bring excellence to the supplier and producer system, and the eggs in their program, Mans eggs, speak for themselves.
Mans eggs are farmed through 30 small-scale farms situated within a 50 kilometer radius around Lethbridge. With a commitment to lowering their environmental footprint and keeping their eggs at peak freshness, they believe the best eggs come from close to home. Not only does local, small-scale farming support local community, it also fosters an environment in which animals can thrive. With the ability to be hands-on with their farms and farmers, Corne and Rudy believe all benefit.
As Rudy began Galimax, he wanted to start a trading company that “puts the farmer first”. In all they do, they strive to see agriculture entrepreneurs thrive and they have built a community of like minded farmers and customers who all agree that high quality, local products have a multidimensional value.
The farms consist of 300 or less birds who are fed an all natural, locally farmed feed and who have access to pasture or shelter as they choose. When asked about the animals in his program Rudy says, “As a farmer, you have a responsibility to animals. Those animals are going to end up as part of the food chain, but while they are alive, they should have a good life.”
Corne sums up the egg program in this way, “But for us the story, the system, the footprint, the quality of product, the whole idea - it makes sense. It’s fun! It's good for the community, it supports young entrepreneurs and young farmers and of course, in the end, we have a good egg.” Belief in what they produce is in and through all they do. Every detail matters, from growing the feed for the chickens to every other aspect that contributes to a quality life for the animal. This is their why: honest, good work in an ethical way.
